The Board of County Commissioners of Pasco County in regular session proclaim January 27, 2017, to be Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day in Pasco County, and urge all residents of Pasco to recognize the importance of filing federal tax returns to improve and enhance the financial stability of all working residents of Pasco County.
EITC, the Earned Income Tax Credit, sometimes called EIC is a little-known benefit for people who work and have low to moderate wages, and many potentially eligible people miss this credit, which can increase their income by up to $6,242. When EITC exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund to those who claim and qualify for the credit. EITC helps Pasco residents keep more of their hard earned money!
Millions of taxpayers rely on their IRS refunds to pay bills or help make ends meet. United Way of Pasco County’s Prosperity Campaign, a partnership with IRS, AARP Foundation, and local financial institutions, focuses on helping taxpayers receive refunds they may not even know they are entitled to receive through this Free Tax Preparation Program. Since its inception, the Prosperity Campaign has returned over $10 million in EITC refunds and $5 million in Child Tax Credit refunds to Pasco residents!
Last year’s Prosperity Campaign tax preparation program was a huge success with over 8,000 tax returns filed for Pasco Residents which saved hardworking citizens approximately $1.6 million in filing fees in 2016. The total refunds issued to residents came to slightly over $8 million, with $1.8 million in Earned Income Tax Credits, over $1 million Child Tax Credits, and slightly over $82,000 in Education Credits. Through a combination of tax refunds and credits, over $10 million was put back in the hands of hard working Pasco residents and therefore retained in the Pasco economy.
