A CHILD’S HOPE
It all began with a question Sandy Thompson asked her daughter, Amy, who was a foster mom. When a child or children are brought to a foster home, what items are most important to the foster parents and kids that can make the transition a little easier?
With that simple question a mission project for the church was launched. “The numbers are staggering,” said Sandy. “This project provides a way for us to give the children something to eat while they wait in the holding rooms during transition.” Once the protective service agent finds a foster home, the child has another bag to take with them with the kinds of things they need to settle in. “We hope to make them feel that someone cares,” she added.
“A Child’s Hope” fundraiser will be held at Faith Lutheran Church (5443 Sunset Road, 34652) on Wednesday, April 13 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Its purpose is to not only raise money for the bags of supplies they give the children, but to also help raise awareness of what a child experiences during this time of uncertainty. Having something to eat or a soft toy to hold offers comfort at times likes these.
The dinner will also be a way for Sandy and the project volunteers to say Thank You to all the agents they work with through Children’s Protective Services of the Pasco and Pinellas Sheriff Offices in both counties. These individuals work daily placing children in foster homes for their protection. Some of the agents have been invited as featured speakers.
Church volunteers collect new, small stuffed animals, coloring books and colored pencils, storybooks, tooth brushes , tooth paste, hair brushes, combs, and small flashlights. They also bag up diapers, baby wipes and wrapped snack food packets for the children waiting in the holding room.
Tickets for this fundraiser will go on sale from Sunday, April 3 through Sunday, April 10 only. No tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets to attend are $10 and the dinner will be buffet style. All proceeds from the event will be used to fund “A Child’s Hope” project.
