Gulfside Hospice Nurse and Patient Honored at Good Samaritan Health Clinic Nurses Gala

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (May 14, 2015) – A Gulfside Hospice & Pasco Palliative Care nurse received the People’s Choice Award at the Good Samaritan Health Clinic’s Nurses Gala on May 8 at Spartan Manor in New Port Richey.

Joyce Mann, LPN, received the People’s Choice Award at the event. Mann has worked at Gulfside since Jan. 2009 and is a member of the blue team, which sees patients at their homes. Mann is also a crisis care nurse.

“Joyce is an exceptional nurse and ambassador of good will to all she meets,” said Linda Ward, Gulfside’s president and CEO. “What an honor for Gulfside that you won this award, as you are the ‘People’s Choice’ and a true representation of the incredible field of nursing.”

In addition to Mann’s award, a special plaque was given to Gulfside patient Lillian Rhodes for being the oldest living nurse in Pasco County. Rhodes, 100, says she worked as an LPN until she was 88.

Rhodes said her favorite thing about being a nurse was meeting people, and she really enjoyed helping others. She was accompanied to the event by her grandson, Ron.

“When I was visiting Lillian, I used my electronic stethoscope on her,” said Rhodes’ LPN Mariela Corcoran. “Lillian was impressed with how easy it was to use to hear the heartbeat and said if she had that when she was working, she could have worked longer than 88!”

Gulfside Hospice, initially licensed in 1989, serves more than 350 patients daily. Gulfside employs over 250 professionals and has more than 500 volunteers, and is the only hospice that serves Pasco County exclusively. Pasco Palliative Care, initially licensed in 2009, serves Pasco County residents facing chronic illness, who are not hospice appropriate or still seeking curative treatment.
